Why is it that so many people seem to think that they have profuse leadership qualities and the only thing they’re good at is tossing around leadership quotes — some of which don’t make any sense. A leader is someone who can get things done. That isn’t what leaders are taught today though. There’s all this feel-good Ines and trying to cast vision that doesn’t really accomplish very much. If you can’t do the work you shouldn’t be put in charge. There too many people trying to direct others work without having any idea how to do it themselves.
It said that Microsoft you never report to someone who is incapable of doing your job for you. That seems like a pretty good organizational hierarchical structure. If your boss is capable of doing your job, he might be able to actually help you if you need something. If your boss has no idea how to do your job he won’t know if you’re doing a good job of it are not.
I’m not sure how far that can scale. It seems like in a large organization you to read eventually reach the point that someone didn’t know how to do the job of the person underneath them. Of course it doesn’t mean that that’s the best thing they could be doing. It doesn’t mean that that’s what their most skilled at. But it does mean that if someone is a programmer, their boss has some programming skills and can do the majority of what they do even if it isn’t as fast.
