When a business looks for new customers, it often relies on mailing lists of potential new customers. However, significant time and money is wasted if those lists contain inaccurate or out of date information. One of the most important things to look for when looking for a mailing list is to evaluate the quality of the list. If some of the entries in the listing are invalid, it will cost the buyer wasted time and money trying to chase down a non-existent contact. Although no list will ever be perfect, it’s important to make sure marketing lists to remain accurate and up to date as much as possible.

While picking a vendor for marketing lists, evaluate how the vendor validates the data in the list. For example, does the vendor use the National Change of Address (NCOA) database? Does the vendor use the Delivery Sequence File (DSF) database? A vendor that uses both of these databases will have a list of names and addresses that have a very high deliverable rate exceeding 90%. For those looking to find new business customers, find out how the vendor validates the listings. Many companies go out of business. And even more go out of business during tough economic times. In those cases, it’s important to see if the organization providing the list to call businesses in order to make sure they’re still in business and whether or not their information such as the number of employees and primary SIC code. Finally, those looking for listings with phone numbers need to make sure that the vendor excludes those that are on the federal Do Not Call list.

After finding the right vendor for marketing lists, decide how many prospects the list will have. Then perform a search to narrow the list down even further. For example, the buyer may want to only include residential customers within certain zip codes or customers within a limited number of miles from the business. Once the list has been narrowed and targeted, purchase the list from the vendor. In most cases, the vendor will deliver the list electronically upon payment.
