Stop Toying Around and Blog

SEO, or search engine optimization, is one of those everyone seems to have an opinion about. And that is certainly true in the case of what the Title tag should contain, how it should be formatted, and how long it should be.I have read on more than one Webmaster Forum that a title should be short and to the point, and I have also read that the title should be as long as is reasonably practical to get a number of keywords in it.One SEO site I know of suggests that as only 80 characters from the TITLE tag are displayed in search results then that is the limit that works best. While it may be true that Google, for example, only show up to 80 characters in their results,(some say up to 65 or 70 in fact) there is little point in using any more. Having said that, Yahoo and some other search engines use more than 70/80 characters, so do not necessarily take the limit too literally. And it is true that to properly convey what your page is all about you are better off using more words when appropriate which may help to target the right audience. If, for example, you have a site selling music cds, you might have your title as “Music4U | Ballads” but would it be better to have “Music4U | Power Ballads of the 80′s” which is more focussed? As long as those extra words are relevant to the page and get good search traffic this can much improve your page’s value.Using the site title is also a good idea either at the beginning or end of all title tags, so this should be taken into consideration when planning the length of your title tag.I also think that it is good to re-use the title tag of each page as the H1 header tag. It helps to confirm what that page is about to both the search engines, and your visitors. Visitors will be more likely to read on if they are convinced from the start that the page they are viewing has what they want.
