Saying it as it is in the work place
Saturday, December 10th, 2011Many firms have a fear of having women work for them, especially when they think about the maternity leave that they are wont to take in the course of their employment. Whilst most of them are not that obvious, some of them are short of saying no to the female workers. So what is all the mambo jumbo about maternity leave? The Statuary Maternity Pay is what it is all about. Knowing that it is stipulated in the law that women get paid when they take time off to have their babies, companies have long felt that they were being shortchanged. A whole year working for a company or maybe a couple of years in the same company yet someone has the guts to complain that you have some months off with full pay. No woman can get paid for working only a few weeks and going off to have a baby. You must have at least 26 weeks work in the same organization. While these may seem unfair to the companies, it does not deplete them of their best workers because they come back rejuvenated and motivated to see that they are valued. statutary maternity pay need not be a subject of controversy, after all, we all know that men cannot get children by themselves except through their wives. The same boss who complains bitterly about it is the same one who expects his wife to receive her full maternity leave plus pay when it’s her time to conceive. Why the double standards? Is one person more important than the others? Maybe it’s about time we all looked at ourselves in the mirror and saw ourselves as our brother’s keeper or in this case, our sister’s keeper.
